In a trip to Asia in 2013, I got involved in a humble social project: the indian organisation Art for Cause, which seeks to use art as a tool for the development of various communities, offering them free artistic education and financially supporting them through art projects that can raise funds. One of its projects is the documentary film “Kicking Boundaries”, which follows the Tibetan female football team. In the story the struggle of the exiled Tibetan community and sport as means for social transformation come together, empowering women in their quest for respect, opportunities and equality .
The documentary was filmed during 2013 and 2014 in various indian regions, like Dharamsala and the remote Ladakh. It tells the past of the families who crossed the himalayas following the occupation of Tibet, it narrates the personal stories of some of the players, and it follows the football team through national tournaments. The major part of its budget was collected through crowdfunding and all the people involved have been working as volunteers. I had the chance to write part of the background music and to direct the recording of ‘We Are United”, an album in which people from different nationalities took part.
The documentary will be screened on the 8th of December at the Fundació Casa del Tibet de Barcelona as part of the Tibet & Human Rights Festival. It will be a good opportunity to raise funds in order to cover expenses of the film and to support the projects of the football team, under the Tibetan National Sports Association.
